Marstal and Ærøskøbing are two little gems in Danish maritime, cultural and urban history. Marstal embodies the history of enterprising seafaring more than any other town. Ærøskøbing is perhaps Denmark's most beautifully preserved seafaring town. This book tells the story of the two neighboring towns on Ærø from the late Middle Ages to the present day; their vastly different history of business, culture, identity and urban space. The book tells the story of how the old market town was challenged and taken over by the maritime-specialized upstart; and how both towns have recently succeeded in creating new viable development paths as their original market town and maritime foundations have disappeared. The book's epilogue seeks to illuminate the well-known rivalry between the two towns through comparisons with the rivalries of a number of other towns, large (including Amsterdam-Rotterdam) and small (including Nordby-Sønderho on Fanø). The book is aimed at anyone with an interest in Ærø and urban and maritime history.

Jens Frøslev Christensen is Professor Emeritus at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), where he has been affiliated with the Department of Strategy and Innovation for many years. He lives in Copenhagen, but spends a large part of his time on Ærø, where he has a house in the small village of Voderup.
